Theresa was elected as Conservative Member of Parliament for Chipping Barnet, North London in May 2005, having been a well known Eurosceptic MEP for the London Region. (1999 – 2005).
As an MEP, Theresa was Deputy Leader of the Conservatives in the European Parliament and a member of the governing board of the Conservative Party. She campaigned strongly against EU directives and red-tape that would undermine the success of the City of London and was at the forefront of attempts to amend the Markets and Financial Instruments Directive.
After only seven months as an MP, in December 2005, Theresa was appointed to the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury. In addition to working alongside George Osborne on developing Conservative economic policy, Theresa led the Opposition scrutiny of the Finance Bill 2006. She is also Vice President of the Party’s youth organisation, Conservative Future.
Theresa is a former barrister and lecturer in law at King’s college, London.
